Sake Aburi Mentaiko Tobiko Don @ Sushiro Thomson Plaza

I heard about this restaurant from a friend. He told me about a Japanese restaurant inside Thomson Plaza that has a good chirashi don with reasonable price, so I went to check it out. They had people lining up around 5.30pm, 15 minutes before they opened. I was not in line because I told them it’s for takeaway. For takeaway, you need to order from counter directly. At first, I wanted to just buy for takeaway but ended up eating there because they have seat for me, although need to share with other people.

The prices look reasonable indeed. I was looking at the menu when one of the staff (or owner.. manager? not sure) approached me and offered me to try their special of the day which has mentaiko and tobiko. Fortunately for him, I’m weak to mentaiko and tobiko! I just can’t ignore them, so I ordered the special menu…

When it came, I actually a bit disappointed because the mentaiko was not as I expected. It was mentaiko mayo 😦 The rice also a bit dry for Japanese rice. Salmon and tobiko was great. I still enjoyed it though, it was still a nice comfort food for me that day. I finished everything! My bowl was shiny at the end ha ha..

Total cost for meal and drink (hot tea) was SGD$22.45. That’s quite expensive. Someone asked me will I go there again in the future, I said I don’t know. Maybe, if I really want to eat Japanese food and lazy to go to another area. Or, maybe I’ll try their chirashi don next time.

Tomidaya – Delicious Shoyu Ramen

Have you ever found out a bit late that there is a good restaurant near your place? This was just happened to me. I posted on facebook about my experience of eating one of the new ramen in town (Ramen Ryu Shin). Then I got a comment saying about another very good restaurant, which is Tomidaya. I’ve heard about Tomidaya many times and wanted to try it. What I didn’t know was the location! (I could’ve tried google it or something but nope). It is actually very close to Ramen Danbo, which is very close to my apartment.

Their location is not very clear on google map because of the missing road. So I had a bit of detour around the location. They don’t have an English sign board as well! I found them because of the queue in front of the restaurant. I heard one of the description for Tomidaya is “a small ramen place inside the Japanese alley on le thanh ton street, which always have queue in front of it”. It really suits them. I joined the queue as well. There were 4 groups of people in front of me.

The place is really small. It can only accommodate 10 people at most, counter style, not a table. The queue was not too bad though. They took order and prepared the noodle before people went in. So when they have empty spot, people can sit and immediately enjoy the Ramen. I looked at the menu and ordered Ajitama Shoyu Ramen. The girl took my order and just after a short time, she let me in. The ramen came not long after I sat down.

Ajitama Shoyu Ramen from Tomidaya

I LOVE IT! Their ramen style is not hakata style, so they don’t have thick soup with the ramen. More like clear soup but very tasty. It is the same style as Ramen Bar Masamune, but for the taste Tomidaya is far better. Me and my husband went to Masamune recently and disappointed with their ramen. I love everything about Tomidaya Ramen. Their marinated egg was so yummy and cooked nicely. And their pork is thinly-sliced and melted inside mouth! I can say that this is the best pork on ramen now.

Tomidaya Menu

When I sat there eating my ramen, I noticed many people ordered their Tsukemen. Maybe I will try it next time! Just need to remember that they are closed on Thursday.

Ramen Ryu-Shin – Nha Hang Mi Nhat Ryu-Shin

It was a rainy afternoon and I wanted something soupy and yummy for my lunch. Ramen it is! Now the question is should I go to my favorite Ramen Danbo, or should I try the new place, Ramen Ryu-Shin. To be honest, I’m not sure if this place is new or just had a renovation, but if my memory don’t fail me then it is a new place.

Ramen Ryu-Shin

The rain has stopped when I departed from my apartment. I walked pass Ramen Ryu-Shin and saw it was crowded and the place is small as well. Oh well, maybe just have lunch at Ramen Danbo as usual. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately?! cos I’ve been wanted to try another place), they were closed today! I walked back to Ramen Ryu-Shin and braced my self up to open the sliding door and entered the restaurant.

There are 7 people sitting at the bar area, all seats taken. Then I saw a girl on the left area but she said it was full there as well. At least I now know that there are another space to sit there! The area with table.

I waited for a while until someone finished their food. One of the foreigner at the corner left the restaurant so I sat there at his place. All other 6 people also left not long after..

A waitress gave me menu book. They have a lot of soup type! There are chinkan ramen, chicken based soup and pork based soup (tonkotsu). Each of them has option of shio (salt) or shoyu (soy saouce). They also have spicy ramen and super spicy ramen! I bet my close friend in Bandung will love it. And one more ramen that is rare to find in Ho Chi Minh City, which is Tantan Ramen. It looks spicy though (and it supposed to be spicy anyway).

I ordered Tonkotsu Ramen with Marinated Egg, flavor was salt (shio). While waiting for ramen to come, I took picture of the place. Should have taken more photos.. I was too shy to do it 😦

Shio Tonkotsu Ajitama Ramen

The Japanese chef served my noodle through the counter. This is it, the moment of truth. The noodle looked promising, even though there was no option to ask for how firm the noodle. The soup was thick and oily. I dig in and loved it! It was a bit salty at first, but later on it got better. Maybe because I didn’t mix it very well, or because of my tongue got used to it already lol. One thing I didn’t like was the pork. It was hard to cut and chew. It was not melted in my mouth!

The total with tax was 154k vnd. More expensive than Ramen Danbo. And taste wise it wasn’t that great compared to Danbo. Maybe next time I will try their tantan ramen. But overall it was a delicious ramen. If you want a different type of noodle then it is good to go to Ramen Ryu-Shin. Or if you want another kind of soup (not the pork based one), it is recommended to try as well. Their spicy ramen also interesting to try!

Thanks for reading.

Ciao.

Genki Sushi Singapore – A Unique Sushi Restaurant in town

When I don’t know what to eat, usually sushi is always a good choice for me. Especially if I have to try a new place (and it was a recommendation from a friend). Genki Sushi is a sushi chain in Singapore and you will find a queue most of the time at their outlets. There are several outlets all over Singapore, such as in orchard central, bugis junction, and chinatown. We were in Orchard area at that time, and the closest one was in Takashimaya (Ngee Ann City), just next to a big Guardian store in Basement 2. Weird that they don’t have this outlet listed on their website.

There were some people before us on the queue, but it wasn’t take long for us to get our seat. The place is quite big as well. We got a seat at table number 2. Each table has a number and a station name. For our table, it was Ueno. Once we sat down, the waitress gave us an ipad with menu on it. First of all, we picked our drink. Hot green tea for me. They gave us the empty glass and I had to pour the green tea (2 small spoon is enough) and boiled water by myself, then mixed it with the back of our chopstick! Fun 😀

Next, we ordered food! Starting from the left is sushi menu. The unique thing from this restaurant is the way they deliver the food. They deliver it with a mini train! There are 3 lines of train on the side of the table. Each train can only bring 4 items. For example, we ordered 3 portions of salmon sushi, then we had to click 3 times and it filled 3 spaces of the mini train on ipad. Once we have 4 items on the train, we can click on execution / delivery. Then continue with another order! Can be another sushi, gunkan, maki, sashimi, fried dish, rice and noodle dish. Or even a dessert!

Food ordering at Genki Sushi

After a while, a train came to our table. Of course, I took a photo! Then we took out all of the food. Once the train was empty, we had to clicked on the button to send the train back. The button that we have to click is depend on which line the train is. There are 3 lines of railway. If the empty train is in number 2, then we have to click button number 2, which is in the middle. It was fun!

Genki Sushi Food Train

Their food was delicious as well. They were fresh and cooked well. I love all of the stuff that we ordered! Their price is reasonable as well. According to my friend, it is the same as sushi tei, but the food quality is better.

Once we finished with our food, we had to go to the cashier and mentioned our table. They showed us our order and after confirming it, we paid it to the cashier.

Genki Sushi yummy food

It was a new and fun experience for me. Plus the food was also yummy. I would recommend you to try this place when you are visiting Singapore. Genki Sushi also available in Japan (well doh!), USA, Hong Kong and China. Also, I would like to thank my friends for taking me to this place!

SABAR Toro 38 Singapore – (Not) All About Saba Fish

Have you known about Japan Food Town in Wisma Atria? I’ve heard it before but never been inside and look around. Last Wednesday I met my friend in Singapore and we walked to Food Republic in Wisma Atria to get a drink and have a seat. When it was time for dinner, we chose Japanese Food since it was there already. Japan Food Town is located at the same floor as Food Republic, which is on the 4th floor of Wisma Atria.

Japan Food Town

There are some restaurants inside the area, selling all different kind of Japanese cuisine. We got hooked at one of the menu there. My friend wanted to eat warm meal, me as well. Also the price mentioned was reasonable enough. It was a Saba Fish Restaurant called SaBar. The place is hidden at the corner. We almost went to wrong restaurant! lol.

At first we sat in front area, but as more people were coming over we had to move to bigger table inside. The two of us started to order first because we were so hungry suddenly! I was interested in Fried Squid. My friend wanted to try Toro Saba Hitsumabushi and also shared jelly fish and green salad. Then another friend came and ordered a fried chicken (tori karaage). It took a while for them to prepare our food but it was worth it.

I LOVE the Fried Squid. Crispy on the outside (thin batter) and soft inside, cooked perfectly. The jelly fish was fresh and yummy. Even the green salad tasted delicious, especially the dressing. Toro Saba Hitsumabushi can be eaten in 2 ways, dry or wet. Both were delicious! I prefer the dry one but it got too salty at one point because of the sauce. Still delicious though! The fried chicken was also crunchy and tasty, but a little too salty. Another 2 friends came and ordered Unagi Hitsumabushi and it was delicious as well! All of the food were cooked really well.

I will definitely come back here to try another dishes, and will recommend this place to all my friends as well. They are quite new restaurant which was established in 2014. So I want them to stay around for a very long time! I think they are able to do so, as long as they maintain their quality. Right now it is quite packed already on dinner time though.
