Curry Shika – Japanese Curry Rice

As a fan of Japanese Curry Rice, I couldn’t just ignore the information about this place. Curry Shika. It is said to be a hidden gem in Saigon. Many good reviews about it, it made me want to try even more. It is located on a street in between Nguyen Train street and Le Lai street. A very busy street! And a bit narrow as well.

The address is 1/4 Nguyễn Văn Tráng. I found a small alley and wasn’t sure but then I saw this sign “Curry Shika”. Oh yeah! I came to the right place. Following the alley, I entered 1 area, not busy at all. Then on the right side I saw Curry Shika restaurant. It was lunch time so I expected some customers there.

It wasn’t crowded when I got there. Only 1 table was occupied. I picked 1 table with a nice view to take pictures 🙂 The atmosphere is very local and Japanese style. The good thing is they don’t allow people to smoke here. The place is small, with only a few tables. I’m not sure if they have 2nd floor.

I looked at the menu, everything in Japanese, with a translation below. I was a bit disappointed because I couldn’t find Katsu on the menu. There is no fried dish! Everything is stewed. I picked beef curry with cheese. It was mentioned as their favorite, so it’s a good point to start.

It came with onion pickles and salad. I liked their onion pickles. The rice was yummy. Their curry was delicious! Soft meat as well. I thought I wouldn’t be able to finish it, but I did! I finished the whole thing! Very clean plate lol. It was tasty. Definitely need to come back next time.

I don’t usually give a tip, but this time I gave some tip on my payment, then I left them. When I got out of the restaurant, I heard someone calling me. It was the waitress. She said to me “I’m sorry, but we are not allowed to accept tip” Wow! Very honest waitress! They must have treated the staffs really well.

So if you’re craving for some japanese curry rice, you can try this place! Recommended to try for lunch.

Ciao.

My favorite pasta at Pizza 4Ps

Everyone here knows pizza 4Ps (maybe not everyone but at least most of the people know about it). It is very famous especially among foreigner, but there are many local people eating there as well. Their pizza is excellent. Made with special recipe and baked perfectly. I like most of their pizzas. But do you curious about their pasta as well? I did. That’s why we sometime order pasta and pizza for 2 persons, and of course their camembert cheese as well.

From few of the pasta I’ve tried there (except for the one with tomato sauce), I have 2 favorite there. The first one is clam and basil in pesto sauce. To be honest this pasta is not as good as before when I first tried it, but it still better compared to others. I would say this pasta is my 2nd favorite one.

Clam and Basil in Pesto Sauce

My number 1 favorite there is Cheese and Pepper Pasta. In Italy, they call it cacio e pepe. I tried this type of pasta when I was in Rome. It is a very simple look pasta, but delicious! And even though it looks as simple as aglio olio, the process to make it is not that simple. Trust me, I’ve tried (and failed 😦 ) It uses 2 types on cheese, and need to be mixed at the right time to make it still al dente after mixing. And pizza 4Ps nailed it! I love this pasta very much. You should try it as well if you are a cheese lover (or even if you aren’t, just try it! It won’t hurt ;)).

Ciao!

UPDATE :

October 2016 – They don’t have Cheese and Pepper Pasta anymore 😦

Kamakura – Dessert Shop

This is one of my favorite place to have lunch in Saigon. Kamakura in District 1. I heard about this place from my Japanese friend. She said they have a good lunch set with reasonable price. Plus the owner is Japanese. I like Japanese restaurant with Japanese owner 😀

Lunch Menu Set

Their lunch set only available from 11.00 am to 2.00 pm everyday (except Sunday). They are very cheap for a price of set menu. I tried karaage menu set.

Karaage Lunch Set

One set always come with a bowl of rice, miso soup and vegetable on side. They were all really good. I especially like the miso soup and veggie. Their karaage was actually good, but it was too bland for my taste. I need to add salt or soy sauce to eat it. But overall it was a good deal!

Their menu was fulled with desserts and drinks. These 2 are just example of their menu.

Blueberry Yogurt

I ordered blueberry yogurt while I worked on my tablet. It was very delicious. I could order for more if my stomach didn’t scream from too many food! This one is recommended. Next time I will try their kakigori, or their other yogurt.

On another day, I tried their tonkatsu lunch set. It was good value for money! I like this little cafe lol. If you have time or if you’re around the area, stop by for lunch or for their desserts. Ciao 😉

Tama River Review – First Try

Tama River is a Japanese restaurant located in 14E1 Thao Dien, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City. It might be hard to find it if you don’t know Thao Dien area (like what was happened to me because my driver didn’t know the way and almost drop me off at another building). Luckily, my friend told me before the way to get there. It is down to residential area opposite of Mekong Merchant. Or when you see Mon Hue restaurant, just go to the street next to it. Some people also don’t know Mekong Merchant and I know exactly that I can’t depend on google map (It is shown at different place). Yes, I was lost before 😦

As we came in, there were not many people on the first floor. Only 2 tables had customers. There is a stair to next floor but I didn’t check the 2nd floor. They gave us 2 kind of menu. One menu was the ala carte, and the other was set menu. The ala carte menu has pictures on it, although not all the food has picture. At least it helps you to choose the dish. But the set menu doesn’t have any picture, just a list of set menu with its description. Would be nice to have some pictures on it, or even all! 😀

I went there with my husband and we both ordered the set menu. His order was Sake Sashimi and Gyu Saikoro Suteki Set (Salmon and Beef), and I ordered Katsu Curry Rice Set. We waited for quite some time, not as quick as we thought, but it was still okay. I was still standing, hasn’t fainted yet…

Sake Sashimi and Gyu Saikoro Suteki Set

The set menu for this dish is including Chawan Mushi, Miso Soup, Meatball and Rice. I really like their Chawan Mushi (steamed egg). It was just like a normal chawan mushi (Yes, I’ve been trying other chawan mushi lately at other restaurants and they tasted weird!). It has chicken, naruto and mushroom at the bottom. Even my husband liked it! He is not a fan. The Salmon Sashimi was good. It was fresh and came with big chunk. Meatball and miso soup were also good. The disappointment was on the beef. It was hard and a bit chewy.

20160519_232415.jpg
Katsu Curry Rice Set

This was my order. I liked them! I finished it all 😀 The katsu was made from pork fillet, so not much fat on it. They fried it nicely, still crunchy but not overcooked. Curry sauce also delicious, a bit spicy but I could still handled it. I especially like the red thingy on the rice. I don’t know what was it, but it made the combination of katsu and rice taste really yummy. Too bad they only gave a little. Maybe I could ask for more? Hmm let’s try next time 😀

For me, this restaurant is quite good. But! For people who lives in central area maybe it will less tempting because of the distance. There are several good Japanese restaurant as well in district 1.

For people in district 2, I think this is the best  Japanese restaurant there. I will go there again, since I often stay a bit longer at district 2. I want to try another set menu 😀

Tama River opens from 11.00 am to 2.30 pm, and from 5.00 pm to 10.00 pm.

Lunch at Ichiba Sushi

One of my favorite Japanese sushi restaurant is Ichiba Sushi at 204 Lê Lai, Bến Thành, 1, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam. Their sashimi is really fresh. They also have unique sushi roll (makimono) and it tastes yummy. We usually go there for lunch, and if we were late then we had to sit on bar because it usually very busy at lunch time.

Salmon Sashimi Ichiba Sushi
Salmon Sashimi

We always order this. Salmon sashimi and salmon belly here is really delicious. Juicy and fresh. You can tell by looking at its color.

Salmon Skin Salad Ichiba Sushi
Salmon Skin salad

This was my first time trying salmon skin salad there. I loved it! Crispy salmon skin combined with cucumber with special sauce. Really..really good.

Assorted kushiyaki Ichiba Sushi
Assorted kushiyaki (scallops, squids and meats)

Since we didn’t know which one is better for kushiyaki there, we ordered the combination one. Each stick has mushroom, onion and paprika. I don’t like the grilled meat one. It was really tough, hard to chew. Disappointing. The squid was not bad, a bit over-cooked but tasted yummy. I like the scallops. Next time I will order only scallop 😀

Sake Teridon Ichiba Sushi
Sake Teridon – Salmon with Teriyaki Sauce Over Rice

The yellow stuff there is not noodle. It’s sliced fried egg over rice. This sake teridon has a huge salmon. They are using Norwegian salmon. Teriyaki sauce they used also tasty. Oishi!! Recommended!

I went there with my husband. No.. I didn’t eat these foods all by myself 😀 Have you been to Ichiba Sushi in Saigon? Let me know your opinion on this on comment below 😉
