Tiger Topoki – Korean Restaurant

Before I wrote this post, I’ve just realized that lately, I’ve been writing about Korean stuff! I need to write about my trip to Thailand, but it takes so long to gather all the information and photos. So, for now, please enjoy this post šŸ˜€

Today I went for lunch at Saigon Center. At first I wanted to eat gyoza but then I remembered there is this Korean restaurant that sells toppokiĀ (Korean rice cake) so I checked it out. Their specialty is toppokiĀ but they also have fondue (fried chicken fondue!! I need to try this next time with someone, the portion looks big), assorted kimbap (rolled rice), soup, hot pot, ramen and some fried dishes. I was interested in kimbap and kimariĀ (deep fried glass noodle roll) so I entered the restaurant.

I took a good table because I can see video clip playing on the wall. Nice to kill time watching Korean singers if you like their music. I ordered kimchi kimbap and kimariĀ with no drink because they gave free water.

The place was quite empty when I came, so I thought I need to write something if theirĀ food turned out to be good. I took some photos of the interior just in case. Every table has a stove for the hotpot and toppoki.

My kimchi kimbap came first. Quite huge portion for 80k vnd! I knew immediately that I wouldn’t be able to finish it, but let’s think about that later. Dig in! It was delicious!! I would prefer more kimchi, but I guess no more space judging from how crowded was the fill. The sauce was awesome. It is made from sesame and wasabi! Yes, there is wasabi in there. Okay, the first dish was good so if the other one also good, this place definitely needs to be visited again.

I think I only ate 4 pieces of kimbap and make sure I have enough space for the second dish. Kimari! Deep fried glass noodle-seaweed roll. One portion is 5 pieces, not bad for 60k vnd. It came with soy sauce. This dish was also yummy. The glass noodle inside was so packed. I could only eatĀ 2 pieces of this. Too full after that..

So, this place is great for a visit with friends! Even if you come alone, still worth to visit since you can take away the leftover food if you can’t finish it. I did. Dinner settled!

If you want to try it, they are on the 5th floor in Saigon Center. At the opposite side of Pepper Lunch.

Have you tried it? Tell me what do you think in the comment.

Galbi Brothers – Authentic Korean BBQ

If you are visiting District 7 Ā Ho Chi Minh City and looking for a good meat restaurant, you have to try this Korean BBQ restaurant. I’ve been there 1 time (which was last year lol) and haven’t been there since. We tried it again because it was the first thing popped out on our mind when we planned to go to D7 yesterday. It is located near the sky garden, on R1-25 Hung Phuoc 4, Pham Van Nghi, D7.

We actually forgot how it tasted, was it good or was it bad. I didn’t recall any bad comment from myself last year so I assumed this place should be good. We arrived there and choose the indoor seating. I’m not a fan of being outdoor in humid weather with some BBQ grill. No thanks. The indoor seating on first floor was full. It has a traditional design, where everyone sit on the floor with short table and need to put off their shoes/sandals. All 4 tables are in 1 room.

We sat on 2nd floor where every table has their own partition and ordered 1 kalbi and 1 samgyeopsal (pork belly). I wanted to eat bibimbap but they don’t have the kind I wanted (I wanted bibimbap in hotstone), so we only ordered herbal rice to try it out.

Side dishes

One thing I like about Korean BBQ restaurant is their side dishes! And this one has so many. Salads, kimchi, hot soup, sweet potato, toppoki (rice cake), cap jae (stir fry glass noodle), steamed egg, tofu, and a basket of veggies to wrap the meat. They also provide cold water for us, refillable. You can order other drink but I stick to the free one šŸ˜€

Many BBQ restaurant are using electric or gas stove for the grill, but Galbi Brothers still using charcoal, which is a perfect medium to grill meat. I like BBQ with charcoal because they taste better and smells better as well!

Pork Belly (Samgyeopsal)

The first meat has come. Pork belly! And they were huge! I never had pork belly as thick as this one. The waitress helped us grilling the meat. We were worried it might not be cooked well because they were so thick, but she did a good job! The meat was well-cooked and it also delicious. Yum!

Galbi (Beef Ribs)

After she finished the pork belly, she changed the grill with this one. It’s unusual to see this on BBQ restaurant, because usually they just use the same grill for different meat. She put a little bit of water at the side of charcoal pot and put this grill for beef. This ribs was also thick, but then we were worried it might be overcooked because the waitress also attending another table and cooked for them. We like medium-cooked beef so yea we were unsure with the way she cooked it for us. But it turned out she really knows what she’s doing! She made the meat medium cooked, still juicy and they were also delicious. Yum! Big feast xD

Too bad she couldn’t understand when we ordered steamed rice, but it was also a good thing because we were already full with 2 meats and 1 herbal rice shared. Lucky she didn’t understand! Lol.

For this meal we spent 590.000 vnd (or about 30 USD) in total. The galbi was 430.000 vnd and pork belly was 160.000 vnd. It was a good deal I think. Happy tummy at the end of lunch.

Gogi House Korean BBQ – First Try

If you go to a mall in Ho Chi Minh City, you will definitely find this Korean BBQ chain restaurant. It is most likely full with customers. We decided to try it since we love Korean BBQ.

When we came it was full so we need to wait for table. While waiting, they gave us the menu so we can look through it and order first. After about 10 minutes they showed us our table and we gave them our order. The place is quite spacious, and a bit noisy. Most of the customers are family or group of friends. We tried Gogi House in Vivocity mall district 7.

In Indonesia, we have a favorite korean bbq restaurant (Chung Gi Wa), so we ordered some dishes that are also used to be ordered by us in Indonesia. I want to compare the taste, the meat quality and also the price šŸ˜†

Marinated Short Ribs

The first one to order in our mind was Kalbi (or Short Ribs). In Gogi House they have 2 kind of kalbi, marinated with gogi sauce and plain. We ordered the one marinated with sauce. When it came, we waited first to see if someone going to assist us on grill. Nope, noone. We need to grill it ourself. They only provide us with metal tongue and scissors. Luckily we’ve been to korean bbq before, so I know how to use grill it and cut it with scissors šŸ˜€

I have a golden rule for how to grill beef meat. Do not overdo it. A good meat will taste at its best if cooked medium. So for this short ribs, at first I put it on the grill for about 20 seconds, then turn it over, cook for about 20 seconds as well. Then start to cut the meat to smaller bites, and cook it the color a bit darker and until it’s not watery but still juicy. Ahh.. mouthwatering…

This marinated short ribs or kalbi in Gogi House is good, but not as good as the one in Chung Gi Wa. It didn’t as juicy as I thought, but it actually still good. If you haven’t tried marinated kalbi in other korean bbq restaurant then maybe this one is tasty enough.

Beef Brisket

Next thing we ordered was Beef Brisket. We never ordered this before in korean bbq, but since we heard our friend always said it’s good we decided to try it. Using the same rule for grilling meat, I did the cooking and it turned out great. Beef brisket has some dark color from the grill but still very soft, and it tasted finger-licking good!

Chapchae (korean fried glass noodle)

If you go to Korean BBQ place, don’t forget to order their chapchae (fried glass noodle in soy sauce). The noodle here is actually taste good, but it’s too oily, and the sesame oil taste was too strong as well. Although… I still finished it lol (Yes, I’m a fan of fried glass noodle!).

The other thing that we ordered was pork cheek (but I forgot to take the picture T.T). If you haven’t known it yet, pork need to be cooked well-done. It is not recommended to cook pork medium (or even raw!). So for this one, I waited for a while until it well cooked. The grilled pork cheek is not bad but not great as well. It is not as juicy as I imagined, but still taste good.

Overall the food in Gogi House is so-so for me. The price is still reasonable though. And they also have huge variation of meat on the menu. If you’re not as picky as I am for Korean BBQ restaurant, I think it’s quite good to go there.
